Closed Sea
The Sea of Okhotsk is surrounded by the Siberian continent, Kamchatka Peninsula, Kuril Islands, Hokkaido and Sakhalin.
Therefore, the water cannot easily flow from the Sea of Okhotsk to the Sea of Japan or the Pacific Ocean.
This is also confirmed by submarine topography.
Closed off from its surroundings, the Sea of Okhotsk provides a unique environment for the formation of drift ice.
